This school was erected in 1904 to serve students in the once thriving “ Manetta Mill” town. Manetta mill was a large textile industry that lined the pockets of many early twentieth century factory workers. This school house is a relatively small, all brick, rectangular building with lots of windows. It is three stories tall and includes features from the “Italian Renaissance Revival style”. All the windows are nailed and boarded shut giving the outside an eerie appearance. Inside, there are 2/3 classrooms and a larger area with a stage, possibly serving an auditorium or mass teaching area. It has tall ceilings and colorful walls. The staircases are long and grand. Upstairs, there are a set of wooden bleachers hung from the ceiling “balcony style” in front of the stage. The interior is all wood and unfortunately has been heavily vandalized and graffitied by careless teenagers. The school closed In 1955, while the mill operated into 1991. Despite being on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, it’s fallen into shambles and receives little care or attention. It’s a great look back into history but sadly it will probably not live on to continue telling it’s stories much longer.
