Tacheles is the ruin of an old shopping centre on Oranienburger Strasse in Berlin. After the shopping centre closed down it was an artists collective from 1990 until 2012.
The house was to be demolished in 1990 but was occupied by protesting artists. The building is still very worn and is both inside and outside completely covered with graffiti. Here were, among other things, an art studio, a cinema, some bars and Café Zapata as well as a sculpture park at the back.
In July 2016, the house remains, but the premises are closed to the public, the sculpture park at the back of the house has been closed down and large construction is underway around the house.
In the summer of 2020 when I walked past the construction work was full on. Now there will be new life for this great building. I wish I had the chance to visit it before it was rebuilt.
