Teufelsberg is an artificial hill in Grunewald district outside Berlin. It’s 120,1 meters high and Berlins second highest point after Arkenberg's landfill in northern Berlin. Teufelsberg is slightly higher than Berlin's highest natural height, Grosser Müggelberg (88,3 meters high) on the city's eastern outskirts.
On the top of the hill, you can find the abandoned former American Cold War radar facility. Since the early 21st century it has been a place for graffiti and street art.
During the Second World War, a defense technical research facility began to be built on the site, but the project was never completed. When the war ended, the site was used as a dumping ground for landslides from the bombed-out Berlin, supported by the solid walls of the unfinished building, and about a third of the total amount of excavated material was stored at Teufelsberg during the years 1950–1972, 26 million cubic meters or equivalent to about 15,000 buildings.
The name Teufelsberg comes after the nearby lake Teufelssee in Grunewald.
At the top of Teufelsberg, the United States built a surveillance station, where, among other things, the United States Army and the National Security Agency conducted air surveillance and signal reconnaissance during the Cold War. The station was closed in 1991 when Allied occupation forces left Berlin.
After the reunification of Germany, there were plans to build the top with exclusive apartments, a hotel, a museum and a restaurant. Due to protests from residents in the area and a bankruptcy, the facility at the top was never completed, but was left to decay for a while.
Teufelsberg has, among other things, been the setting for the films “Wir sind die Nacht” (2010) and The Gamblers” (2007).

I have visited Teufelsberg 2014 and 2020. The differences was quite big from the different years. Now it's more of a tourist attraction. In 2014 I was able to go all the way to the top of the tower which has the best acoustics I have ever experienced. I have preserved it in an audio file where my friend whistles "Somewhere over the rainbow". The echo was so strong that it hit the chest like a strong bass sound.

De teufelsberg is een voormalige Amerikaanse afluister installatie uit de koude oorlog.
De plek is nu slechts door n paar hippies bewoond
Voor n paar euro kun je binnen en foto s maken
Ik vond t zeer de moeite waard
Vervallen en t had wel iets van mysterie . En prachtige grafitti’s

Die Station auf dem Teufelsberg ist eigentlich kein "Lost Place" in unserem Sinn. Man stellt sich in eine Schlange, zahlt 5 € Eintritt und ist mit mehreren Hundert anderen Leuten auf dem Gelände. Der Turm ist gerade gesperrt und nicht begehbar. Bilder ohne Menschen zu schießen, ist nahezu ausgeschlossen. Dennoch ist die Anlage an schönen Tagen ein tolles Motiv (und Berlin ja sowieso immer eine Reise wert). Von uns trotz der Besuchermassen dennoch "Daumen hoch".
